Mission & Vision
Our mission is to find out what photographers are attempting to accomplish behind the lens. Photographers often go beyond creating portraits simply based upon likeness. They attempt to provide a critical analysis of the “institutional critique” of the human form. We use examination of displays and ideologies associated with visual arts to assist our readers in finding through photographs the illusion of permanence in the “frozen” moment of a photograph.
Exploring Intersections
History, Technique, and Narrative: These three categories represent the areas of exploration for Portrait Arts Insights. As photographic techniques have evolved over the years so too has the ability of photographers to create meaningful portraits. From the rigid chemistry used in early portraiture to the advanced technology available today, Portrait Arts Insights will follow this evolution.
The impact of European classical painting and Flemsih traditions continues to influence contemporary artistic style, including the metaphorical themes present in traditional works. Portrait Arts Insights will examine these influences and their continued relevance in defining contemporary storytelling.
Portraits are also records of culture. This is achieved through collaborative acts of “presence” using both digital and physical media. PAI will focus on both aspects.
Similar to a nomadic museum, Portrait Arts Insight aims to expand viewers' perspectives by featuring international styles. Styles such as the poetic French tradition or current digital innovations will be featured.
